Farm Notes — April 2024: Lost Chicks Rescued, Grey’s Babies and Kittens Learning to Trust

Every few days we post a short clip from the farm on YouTube. Here are all thirty from April in one place — tap any of them to play it right here.

Roosters, old and young

Grey was supposed to have retired, but he has far too much energy! Young rooster Udon had a run-in with Cho, an older hen, and later he just wouldn’t come down while I was trying to work. A fighting chicken we rescued now lives a relaxed life where every day is a Sunday.

The hens

Our beautiful chickens spent a peaceful afternoon together. Tomoko and Curry have matching combs, proof that they’re parent and child (Nanoaru isn’t part of that family). Aurora became a whole different hen once she went broody — scary! — and Purin, a bantam hen, went for a walk. Donut is back in the chicken coop and has settled in, and Nanoaru snuggled up to Luna, an older hen and a younger one together.

Chicks, lost and found

Listen to the cute chirps of some lost baby chicks this spring — we wish them all happiness. Chicks of all different sizes are eating plenty so they can grow big, and lost chicks found in Kailua were rescued. Grey’s babies are unique little characters, and much too cute.

The cat corner

Farm cats watch over the goats, too — good job, Natsu! Sorry for interrupting Madara at work. Natsu tried to get inside the netting (not from there, Natsu!), and big Ao is the ace of our farm cats. Stray brothers Fuku and Yuki have started learning to get used to people, rescued kittens are in socialization training with our farm cats helping out, and Sapphire tried to climb into the cat food bag.

Ducks

We spotted a pair of wild ducks at a supermarket in Kailua — a couple out shopping together? At home, when I pulled up some big weeds, our ducks came over (no squabbling, please), and their curiosity made it hard to get any work done. And Mint, our Muscovy duck, has grown quite a dignified air.

Happa, bananas and spring

Cherry tomatoes sprang up on their own — a gift from the little birds. Rooster Sunday and Happa the rose-ringed parakeet are good friends, and Happa has her own unique way of communicating. We have a great banana harvest and can’t wait to eat them, and spring brought a painted lady butterfly.
