Farm Notes — December 2024: A Duckling Hatches, Parsley Becomes a Mom and Quarantine Days

Every few days we post a short clip from the farm on YouTube. Here are all thirty-one from December 2024 in one place — tap any of them to play it right here.

The rooster corner

Frankie looks scary but is a big softie, and Peach is a handsome rooster whose chest looks like a peach. Seven-Eleven’s tail feathers were growing back, and Raven, who used to get sick often, was completely healthy again. Hare-chan has been looking very handsome lately — is it his popular season? And a rooster’s crow rang in the New Year.

Lovely hens

One hen had bumblefoot (an infection on the bottom of the foot), which looked a little painful. Brownie, almost seven, has fluffy cheeks as her charm point, and Tanpopo was doing well — thank you for settling in, Tanpopo! Ponyo is a charming hen, a three-year-old newcomer looks just like Luna, and fluffy old-lady hen Cinnamon closed out the month.

Snack time

Cutting the grass meant endless snacks for the chickens, and nutritious bean plants were a big hit too. One spot turned into the chickens’ favorite — and no, I didn’t cut corners! At the end of the month I harvested ripe papaya and shared it with the flock.

Peaceful days, even in quarantine

Chickens are peaceful creatures that don’t fight without reason, and they give us food for the soul. Bird flu had been found in Hawaii for the first time, so the chickens were living in quarantine — and enjoying it in their own way. One day something just seemed a bit off, but most days ended the same: peaceful, and thankful for how wonderful a chicken society can be.

The farm cats

Our easygoing farm cats love to get in the shot, and they’re cute little ninjas too. They were full of energy, and some who aren’t siblings get along wonderfully. Kitten Chai loves rustling sounds and took on a piece of fruit.

Ducks and tortoises

The tortoises are growing slowly — round and cute. The ducks make a big fuss over the smallest things, and we caught a touching moment: a baby duck breaking out of its shell. Parsley, our mysterious duck, finally became a mom, and a Muscovy duck took on parenting for the first time, with a little help.
