Hello from Chicken Paradise — it’s me and Pen-chan, under another blue sky. Good morning to the chickens, the little chickens, and the ducks!
Garden corner: checking the seeds
With a rooster watching over me, I checked the seeds I planted and gave them water. The flower seeds: nothing but weeds so far. Where I planted watermelon something has sprouted, but I honestly can’t tell if it’s watermelon or a weed.
Now the tomatoes. Wow — tomatoes are up! In the next spot, nothing… wait, yes! A little sprout right at the bottom. One more tomato spot has only weeds.
Dolly’s bald patch
Dolly is in her shedding season and has a little bald patch. Strictly speaking it isn’t bald: her old wool is falling out and new white wool is showing underneath. She wouldn’t stand still to show me at all… finally. Right here you can see clean white wool peeking through. The old wool actually comes off if you pull it.
More digging with the cultivator
In the slightly expanded garden area I want to plant corn, but it isn’t ready yet. First I need to pull out big tree roots and dig deeper, so that hopefully we can actually get to planting.
Today’s helper is the cultivator again, and after really using it I think it’s great: it’s small enough for a petite woman like me, you can speed it up when you want to dig deeper, and it runs on a battery, so there’s no gasoline to worry about.
Today I pulled out one more root. Progress is slow. There’s a shade here, a bit like a small building, which makes working much easier. Under it I tried to pull a big tree root, but it wouldn’t budge at all. So that’s it for today. Taro helped too. I’m hoping the garden turns into a real garden next time, but it’s hard work.
Meet Brownie
Brownie has the same name as the dessert. Like Okki-chan, whom I introduced before, she’s an Old English Game bird. I don’t know the name of her color. She’s another one I chose when I went to pick up chickens from someone who offered them to us when I was starting the coop.
Her slightly fluffy cheeks are her cute trademark. At first her whole body was about the same brown as her face, but her colors changed as she grew up, and now she’s not really “brownie” anymore. Oh well. Her breed isn’t really an egg-laying breed either, but she works hard and lays an egg every day.
Thank you for watching Chicken Paradise. See you in the next video!
