Hello from Chicken Paradise — it’s me and Pen-chan, just after the rain.
Hare-chan’s escape
While we were away, Hare-chan escaped. He then opened another rooster’s cage all by himself and challenged him to a fight. The result: an injured comb, with a little damage on the other side too. Ouch! But he’s as lively and mischievous as ever.
A friend brought us a fruit called pear squash, a member of the gourd family. I was told chickens eat it, so I cut it up and shared it around. Delicious, apparently! The big birds ate so fast that I took some to the little ones separately. Star, with his amazing head, got some too.
Fresh grass bedding
The grass on the coop floors had gone flat and was breaking down, so it was time to top it up. I gathered a pile and split it into loads to carry. The chickens kicked and trampled the new pile down to half its size almost immediately. Cutie climbed right on top, Shi-chan too, and everyone kicked it around looking for grass seeds. Sonata and Grey called the hens over. All that digging is great exercise — but because it flattens so fast, I add grass quite often.
I also built taller private rooms for our tall roosters, Shiro and Flute. Shiro was too busy eating to comment. Flute likes the grass floor.
Where chickens sleep
People often think chickens can’t fly, but they actually fly up somewhere very high to sleep — some of ours sleep higher than I can reach. In the dark they can’t see, so sleeping high keeps them away from predators. Normally they’d sleep in trees, which also shelters them from the rain. Seeing them all squeezed together in a row is so cute.
We have a lot of roosters, so at night the roosters sleep in private rooms. Otherwise they can get hurt fighting over sleeping spots. Off you go, Satoshi the rooster — good night, see you tomorrow!
Meet Purin
Purin is an Old English Game Bantam in a color called red pyle (the hens aren’t very red). Glico helped raise her — they’re not far apart in age, so more like a big sister — and they’re still close. Purin is also friends with a rooster named Star. When they were small, Purin was the stronger one, and even though Star is now many times her size, she still goes after him and kicks him in the head. Poor Star!
Thank you for watching Chicken Paradise! See you in the next episode.
