Our New Quail Lay Their First Eggs — Each with Her Own Pattern

Watch the episode (in Japanese)

Good morning from Chicken Paradise Hawaii — Marron is with me, and it’s a very cloudy day.

First quail eggs

I found one egg, and another one over by their little house. The quail the man next door gave us, about two months old now, have started laying! Come on out, stars of the show — who laid these? We checked each of them, and it looks like two of the girls laid.

The pattern on a quail egg works like a stamp. Each female quail has her own “ink” inside her body that makes the pattern, and every one is different. So once you learn which quail lays which pattern, you can tell right away who laid each egg.

Quail laying for the first time sometimes produce cloudy, whitish eggs like this one. They’re perfectly fine to eat, but many people don’t want to because of how they look. Little differences like this are fun every time, so I’ll keep watching. Good luck, girls!

Harvest day

Ta-da! More strawberries have turned red — three here and two more over there (one still needs about a day). And we have a cucumber, a spiky one! It formed properly but is a bit small. Maybe it wasn’t pollinated well, or didn’t get enough nutrients. When I showed the chickens a strawberry, it got snatched right out of my hand. So these are going to the chickens too.

For some reason, every lettuce we grow here flowers and turns bitter, so it doesn’t look much like lettuce anymore — but I harvested it anyway. Look at this giant lettuce: about twice the size of Pen-chan! Pen-chan didn’t want any. It looks bitter. Honestly, this isn’t lettuce anymore, it’s just a weed.

The chickens loved it, though. Fresh lettuce, picked five seconds ago! Taro peeked in, desperate for some (later, Taro!). Piccolo stepped aside because he’s scared of our leader, Heart. Heart called out “there’s lettuce!”, eating a little himself while tearing off pieces and handing them out to the girls. Little Kin-chan made off with a piece of the lettuce Heart had torn up and handed out.

Soaked again?

Last, some for Mint, our duck who eats anything green. She showed up soaking wet. What happened? “I was bathing in the water, and even though I’m usually waterproof, today — just today — I got soaked.” Really? I’m pretty sure you were soaked last time too. “No comment.” Your waterproofing isn’t working — please oil those feathers properly!

It got completely dark again. Thank you for watching Chicken Paradise, and see you in the next episode!
