Fresh Cucumbers, a Tiny Melon — and Meet Trumpet the Guardian

Watch the episode (in Japanese)

Good morning from Chicken Paradise — it’s me and Dolly, under another blue sky.

Cucumber harvest

We picked lots of cucumbers today. Some are a little small, but they were hanging so low they almost touched the ground, and fruit down there gets found by bugs very quickly. So I harvested those ones early.

A tiny melon

The honeydew melon plants have gotten really big and fruit has started to form, so I’ve been pruning — thinning out the fruit. One had been nibbled by insects, so I picked it early. Look at it: it’s tiny, but the bottom end is already completely melon-colored. So small, and already like that. Interesting!

I cut it open. The bugs had been at it, but inside, it really is a melon. Since there were bugs in it, this one went to the chickens.

Meet Trumpet

Today’s chicken is Trumpet. He’s the brother of Mikan and Chobi. On a night of light rain, after the sun had already set, he was found peeping under a trash bin and was rescued. Back then he was a tiny, jet-black little lump — and in no time at all he grew into this fine rooster. I never imagined that tiny thing would get this big, so it’s honestly a surprise.

Trumpet’s trademark is his comb: beautifully shaped and standing up straight and sharp. The pattern on his chest is really pretty too. When he stands tall he looks very sleek — slim and long-legged, built like a fighting bird. He looks a little like a Shamo, a Japanese game breed.

He lives in the room with our big egg-laying hens, where he’s the number-three rooster, and his job is guarding the hens inside. So he hardly ever comes out. You’ll usually find him up on a perch or by the nest boxes, keeping watch over his girls.

Thank you for watching Chicken Paradise! See you in the next video.
