Gentle Taro in the Bigger Playground — and Meet Walter

Watch the episode (in Japanese)

Good morning from Chicken Paradise Hawaii. It’s a heavy, cloudy day.

Morning rounds

Good morning, everyone — lively already, aren’t you? What’s wrong, Piccolo? One of your tail feathers is broken. He’s refusing interviews today, apparently. Good morning to the little gang, too… although you’re not so little anymore.

Taro and the bigger playground

What are you up to, Taro? Yo, Taro! The playground has gotten wider — what do you think? Pretty great, right? Roosters are scary. Yes, roosters, you included. But now it’s big enough that almost all of you roosters can come out at once.

Sonata, he says you’re scary! Look, Taro, there are lots of the medium-sized chicks you like. Why don’t you go play? Off you go. Taro is a gentle soul — a rooster who’s a little timid, almost like a person, and maybe too kind.

Meet Walter

Today’s chicken is Walter. The person who first kept him named him Walter, so we decided to keep the name.

Walter is a fighting rooster, and he was used for fighting. His former owner came across some rowdy boys who had him and were wondering what to do with him. Saying, “He’s going to die — that’s a fatal wound,” this person threw a wad of cash at the boys, grabbed the rooster and ran. Quite a story!

After that rescue, his eye injuries and other wounds were treated. I think he’s probably blind in one eye now. He was well loved there, but that person works as a pet sitter, so dogs come to the house often, and keeping a rooster alongside dogs just wasn’t going to work. So he came to live with us.

Why are you frozen, Walter? I put food in for you — a big heap of it! There’s still a part of him that doesn’t quite trust people yet.

Thank you for watching Chicken Paradise Hawaii! See you in the next video.
