Donated Veggies and Neon-Pink Dragon Fruit — How Did the Flock React?

Watch the episode (in Japanese)

Good morning, everyone! Cooler today. Basil, why are you always complaining? You run the wrong way every single day.

The birds are finishing the eggshells I gave them yesterday. Rats aren’t interested in eggshells, so they’re all still here. Beanstalk, out of the way! Then I opened up the chicks’ area — what energy! Hey, don’t climb on my back. Chicks are chaos.

A happy donation

Today I have very happy news: a supermarket that sells organic vegetables donated produce it can’t sell — all kinds of fruit, asparagus, kale, and broccoli in the box underneath. It all still looks delicious, but they can’t sell it to people, so it’s coming to our chickens.

A friend of mine worked hard on this, writing emails to ask whether we could get vegetables and doing all sorts of things. I’m really grateful. Now we’ll receive vegetables every week. Yay!

Let’s party

I set aside the vegetables chickens can’t eat; everything else is fair game. Tomatoes first! I break the small ones in half and toss them — a nice bite size. Next, some lettuce that got too wilted to sell. Everyone loves lettuce… and someone ran off with it. Okay, that works too.

Then asparagus, for the first time. They were curious. Purin came up full of energy. Shachi, you’re watching, but you don’t want any? Once I cut it into smaller pieces, they carried it off.

Next, an overripe, squishy papaya (with a sticker that just wouldn’t peel off). I took it to the middle of the playground — eat this delicious papaya! I split another for the little ones so everyone got some. At first no one came — they couldn’t see it. Come on, you’ve seen papaya before!

Dragon fruit

Finally, dragon fruit, which none of them had ever eaten. I split it in half and — ta-da! — the inside was an amazing, vivid pink. I peeled some and offered it by hand. One hen gave me a “what on earth is that?” look. One did eat a bit, but most weren’t impressed — I think they’d just never seen anything like it. It’s probably tasty! But the reaction was so lukewarm that dragon fruit is out. Papaya is still number one.

Thanks for watching Chicken Paradise! See you next time.
