Good morning! First thing this morning, I put the chicks out. Here they are in the potato field, where they’ve somehow settled in. The yellow ones are ducklings — we’re raising them together. A field is the best place for chicks, and I could watch them all day.
The guinea fowl are growing up
I can hear the guinea fowl calling — maybe they saw the chickens come out and decided it was dangerous.
The guinea fowl have grown. The one in front has a blue face — its face has started turning blue, and the thing under its chin (the wattle) has gotten bigger, so I think it’s a male. They’re all talking to each other.
A new organic feed
It’s very hot today, and I’m sweating buckets. I bought a new feed. I found it at a big warehouse store: an organic feed made for laying hens, and to my surprise it’s a little cheaper than the feed I usually buy. Very tempting! Each bag is 50 pounds (22.67 kg), and I bought seven bags. They’ll be gone in a week.
I had a taste of it earlier, and it tastes a lot like its ingredients, such as corn, so I think the flock will like it. The pieces are fine, so it’s easy for chicks, ducks, anyone to eat — though we soak our feed in water, so that doesn’t matter much for us.
The taste test
First, let’s have Pen-chan, who is sulking and grumpy, try it. Here you go, Pen-chan — everyday food for the common folk. Try it! “I ate some too, so you can eat it too.” She stares hard, but won’t eat. Pen-chan believes she isn’t a chicken, so she refuses chicken food, and that’s that. Oh! No — she was only digging. “That’s good enough for the video, right?” No, it’s not!
The chickens inside will surely eat it, so I soaked some in water and took it in. It’s new food! Is anyone going to notice? They started eating right away. How is it, Spice? Not so great? Then Bee, famous for her messy head, is eating it — good for you! If the roosters noticed, more would come.
I put it next to the usual food to advertise it. Oh, Chico found it! Spice, you’re back again? That’s the normal one! This is the organic one! The reaction is weak. Maybe I need to give it when they’re hungrier. Chico is doing his best to promote it, so I’ll try it again this evening when I give them a big meal, and we’ll see what happens.
Thank you for watching Chicken Paradise! See you in the next episode.
