This one starts with something I didn’t know was being filmed: an all-out hen impression!
Playground No. 3, one week on
This used to be playground No. 2, but really it’s No. 3 now. It’s been about a week since the extension, and there’s still lots of grass. Because the bushes hide the roosters from each other, they relax and end up milling around at very close range, and then fights break out.
Thanks to the bushes, the weak hens can now live freely. Pachita lives here too, spacing out under the protection of Othello Black. I also let out Melona, the orange one, and she can sunbathe while staying half hidden, her head feathers all ruffled up. On the other side there’s hardly anywhere to hide, so life is harsh.
Othello Black runs the area just to the right of the bushes as you come in, and Dal runs the left. They’re so close, but since they can’t see each other, they get cocky and fight. Then Lord Trumpet barges in; he’s strong enough that nobody scolds him anywhere. In the bushes, the weak roosters I let out the other day are working hard, faces bloodied, to earn their place. I let out about six, and about two who tried came straight back in.
Red
This is Red, who’s doing well thanks to the bushes. He’s named Red because he’s red all over. He’s a wild rooster who went on a rampage at a friend’s house, injuring hens and chasing them around. At first he seemed to be protecting the hens, so it was all right, but things went badly, so he came to us. Now that there’s more room I’m letting roosters out, while watching how it goes.
The other birds are enjoying the new space too. The guinea fowl are curious about all the grass, the ducks are busy bathing, and with all the green around, it feels more like a resort.
Meet Chive
And here’s Chive, in the grass! I can see her cute face behind the grass curtain. Ouch! Why so mad? Are you sitting on eggs? You’re not. Chive is very popular with the male ducks, so she was always running and hiding, but here she can hide properly. She even let me touch her.
For our newer followers: Chive fell from the sky. About a year ago I was driving out of the farm when a mysterious white object came down, and it turned out to be a duck. Her kind doesn’t live in the wild, so I caught her and took her in, and she’s still with us.
Thanks for watching Chicken Paradise Hawaii! See you next time.
