After the Storm — Can No. 354, a Rooster Who Can’t Walk Well, Fit In?

Watch the episode (in Japanese)

Another storm

Another storm came and went. The grass is flattened in one direction and things are scattered everywhere. The weather has been rough this year.

The rabbit hutch lost its lid, the playground is a muddy mess again, and the stepladder blew over. But the chickens look fine, the pigeon loft was okay, and the playground isn’t broken. Happy, that was scary, wasn’t it?

Meet No. 354

This fighting rooster used to wear tag number 354. He was a half-grown chick when he came, but he’s quite grown up now.

He was thrown out. Because of a neurological disease he can’t walk well, and he can’t fight either, so he was dumped by the side of the road, and I picked him up. His legs are still a little bad, but they’ve more or less healed.

Normally I wouldn’t put a fighting bird out with the others, but he’s still young, so I’m trying him in the playground. Surprisingly, when he’s attacked, he’s very good at saying “sorry”: he lowers his head and runs away. From a fighting bird! It looks like he can live with everyone.

He can’t use his legs well, so he can’t scratch his face or groom his feathers, and he’s a little dirty. Maybe once he’s outside he’ll learn to take dust baths. He does fight a little, as expected, so there’s some blood on his face. A normal, healthy fighting bird would keep going until it was torn to pieces and dead…

Tamamushi checks out the newcomer

Tamamushi noticed the newcomer (who doesn’t have a name yet) and came over with a “Who’s this guy?” look. Tamamushi is an interesting type too: his tail points down and spreads out, and with his round body he looks a little Cochin-like. Don’t glare like that!

Let’s hope No. 354 stays out of trouble and gets along with everyone. When it’s time to run, run!

Around the farm

This is Princess’s friend, whose cold is much better now. Lately the guinea fowl seem curious about the chickens’ eggs. Maybe they’ll start laying soon? Yuhi and Knight hang out together a lot. Chive looks like he has something to say. Spaz and a little black bird are friendly and come right up to me.

This year’s youngsters have all gathered on the chicken tower. Does Hiyo-chan have what it takes to be a leader? Heart used to do the same thing. And this is Barbie, eating with Snickers. She’s gotten much bigger.

Meanwhile, No. 354 is in training. Tamamushi is threatening him, but he’s quick on his feet! Go for it!
