Hello, little room
Hello, everyone in the little room! Nugget, so you were a girl all along. I didn’t know! Though now that you mention it…
Gin-chan, I finally got my driver’s license and a car. What do you think? No idea, huh? What do you think, Fujiko? That face says, “What are you talking about?”
Poppy, you’ve grown up so well. More than half a year ago, Poppy was still a half-grown chick. Now look at what a fine rooster he’s become.
Heart’s rare dust bath
I set off to look for this year’s many half-grown chicks. Oh! The great Heart is taking a dust bath (chickens roll in dry dirt to keep their feathers clean). Heart is always busy protecting everyone, so seeing him dust-bathe is very rare. He stopped as soon as he noticed I was watching. It’s okay, go ahead! Thank you for always working so hard.
Hiding from the heat
It’s so hot that the half-grown chicks won’t come out of the bushes. Look closely and you can spot faces and bottoms. That’s Spaz over there. And here comes Barbie. Come here, Barbie! There’s food, too. “We know,” they say. Please don’t go back, Barbie!
I scattered some corn, and Snickers came out. Snickers is one of this year’s half-grown newcomers, and one of four chicks who came to us together. A young woman came across some children, about elementary-school age, who had tied string to newborn chicks’ legs and were mistreating them. She told them to stop, took the chicks and raised them, then didn’t know what to do next, so they came to us.
You’re a rooster, Snickers, so it won’t be easy: we have a lot of roosters. Soon they’ll be exactly half the flock, around 100. What are we going to do?
Over there are two small orange-and-black chicks that run away if I get close. They came from a place where chickens were being trapped. Both are roosters, so I caught them first for their safety and kept them in a cage, but they kept fighting, so I let them into the playground even though they’re still young. Even Pepper, who is on the small side, looks big next to them. And this one, still a total chick with such a pretty face, tried to bully its siblings to death, so I separated them early. Scary!
