Hello from Chicken Paradise Hawaii, with Heart — and Star is here too. I haven’t filmed for YouTube in a while, but I’m back!
It’s been hot, hot, hot lately, and nobody feels like doing anything. Lots of hens are sitting on eggs because it’s so warm. Chobi has started giving me some serious pecks. Chobi, you’re scary!
New hens: Soy and Pearl
Our egg-laying team, always huddled together in a crumpled heap, recently got some newcomers: Soy — as in soy sauce — and Pearl. They came from one of our YouTube viewers whose owner just couldn’t keep them anymore. They’ve finished their two-week quarantine and are very friendly, though still learning where the food is.
Soy and Pearl get along very well. Pearl had been looked after somewhere else where the care wasn’t great, and her head went bald. The feathers on her head and back still haven’t grown back, but the rest have, so I think she’ll be okay.
This year’s young birds
Hiyo-chan stayed medium-sized, a strange yellowish color with a famously unmotivated face. Spurs, one of this year’s young birds, has grown big and started crowing, and his younger brother Snickers is a good size too. For some reason everyone wants to name chickens after sweets, so now we have two Oreos and two Twinkies — a big one and a little one.
The little ones’ room gang — Heart, Iruka, Purin, Mikan — have started coming out to the grassy area. Everyone’s resting in the shade, which is fine, but please stop laying eggs in the bushes — we really don’t need any more chicks! Barbie, the friendliest of this year’s young team, won’t be caught without a snack. Barbie’s original owner named her, so I don’t know where the name came from.
Meet Cutie Pie
We have a young bird named Cutie Pie, but that’s too long, so I call him Kewpie. A little way from a site where we were catching chickens, a friend of the person who asked us to do the catching found him as a chick, just sitting in front of their house. They felt so sorry for him that they asked us to take him.
He was adopted out for a while, then came back to us very tame — which made it hard for him to fit in with the coop. He’s slowly settling in. “Cutie pie” means a cute little one in English, and yes, he’s a rooster. Roosters can be cute too! Wherever he is, if you call him and tap the ground, he comes running.
It’s too hot for chasing chickens today. Thank you for watching, and see you next time!
