New Hens Arrive, Udon’s Gang Graduates, and Julietta Brings Babies

Watch the episode (in Japanese)

Hello from Chicken Paradise Hawaii, where the cats and goats share the space nicely! First job: trimming the goats’ hooves. After a few rounds I’ve gotten the hang of it. Young goats’ hooves grow fast, so they need regular care, and Yagisuke is still small, which makes it easy.

Five new hens

Then a box started crowing, and Natsu came to inspect. It’s a rooster, riding in an udon noodle box because we had no carrier — but he is not udon.

These newcomers come through friends of friends who live deep in the mountains. They had caught the chickens around their home and kept 16 as pets, but were told they could keep only two, so all of them are coming to us — five so far.

This is Goldie — basically the English version of our Kin-chan’s name! She’s about a year old and apparently the oldest. The two small orange hens beside her are her daughters. The black hen, Natasha, is a bit strong-willed and has squabbled since arriving yesterday, but she seems healthy. And this is Sybil. They couldn’t dust-bathe before, so they’ve been rolling in the sand nonstop, and they’ve already laid two eggs.

Anthony and Rex

Anthony came to us about half a year ago. He’s supposed to be super wild, yet lately when I stroke his neck, he stretches it out. His pea comb is a bit out of shape. Since day one he’s cared more about a massage than the rooster in front of him.

Monarch and Rex are here too, and the roosters eat side by side without fuss. Rex, the room’s leader, is big but gentle. Yesterday it took him about a minute and a half to notice Natasha and Fujiko fighting — then he came over and stopped it. A little slow, but he gets the job done.

Udon and friends graduate

While I distract everyone with snacks, I release the youngsters from their cage. Shiroppy charges right in — brave! Curry is careful. Snack party! Nanoaru charges in and a scuffle breaks out, but afterward everyone wanders in and out, and they seem to be managing. I forgot to film Udon! No real trouble, so we’ll keep watching.

Julietta’s babies

On April 22, Julietta brought her cute babies over — the ones we first showed in one of our Shorts. As adults, the more yellow ones turn mostly white and the dark brown ones get more black. Lucky and the other cats watch over them. I set up a small pool for the babies, but apparently not today. Off they went toward the goat shed. Thank you for showing us your babies!

Thanks for watching Chicken Paradise! See you next time.
