Cock-a-doodle-doo! Mornings at the farm begin with Heart’s crow. Today I’d like to show you the work of Heart, everyone’s leader.
Patrol and safety checks
When I open the door, Heart comes out almost last. He walks to about the middle and crows: safety check. Then he goes all the way to the far end and crows again: safety check. On another day it was just the same — out near the end, to the middle, cock-a-doodle-doo. His basic job is patrolling and checking that it’s safe, and when the coast is clear, he crows.
Finding food is another important job. “There’s food here!” Once he’s called the hens over, he goes back to his rounds. If Dolly gets too close, he makes a warning call. He’s not so keen on Mint the duck, who gets to the food before the hens do — and that strange beak bothers him. Meanwhile, Star looks jealous.
It looks like Heart is first to eat, but he’s actually handing it out to everyone. He’s always watching out for those around him. Heart is a good one. I got worried and asked whether he’s eating properly himself, and he ate some grass right in front of me, as if to say, “Yes, I’m eating.” When Beanstalk came too close, Heart chased him off with just a threat.
Stopping a fight
Heart is a strong fighter, too. Satoshi and Iruka started fighting, and Heart noticed and came over. Iruka felt Heart’s gaze and lost all will to fight — he’s more afraid of Heart than anything. Satoshi wasn’t done yet, but a good leader doesn’t want a pointless fight. When Satoshi wouldn’t give up, Heart finally stepped in. Satoshi is scared of Heart too, so he had no wish to stand up to him. Heart drove him off with his eyes alone. Thanks to our leader, everyone’s safe again today.
Parsley grows and grows
This is Parsley. It’s less “growing” than “turning giant.” A few days ago this container was like a swimming pool; now it’s somehow cramped, and Parsley can’t dive anymore. Parsley grows faster than a chicken chick: the body gets bigger, but the feathers are slow to come in. Already bigger than Marron — who got so scared he took a fighting stance! Growing up healthy and fast.
