A DIY Water System for the Rabbits — and Moo-chan’s New Home

Watch the episode (in Japanese)

Today’s topic is water for the rabbits. I’d like to tell you how we made this water system. There may be a little footage of us building it, but I barely talk in it, so I’ll explain now.

Why so many rabbits?

As some of you know, we took in a lot of rabbits from someone whose rabbits had multiplied out of control. We got an SOS and decided to help. We took on a project: look after them here for a while, check that the females weren’t pregnant, check everyone’s health (many of the males and females were thin), and find them new homes.

The water system

We’d been using small household water bottles, but with this many rabbits they couldn’t keep up, so I looked into commercial watering systems. A tube runs from a water tank, and only the drinking nozzles stick through the wall of the rabbit house. When a rabbit touches one, water comes out. It’s a common setup in the US. Remember, everyone, that’s how you drink!

I put five drinkers in each room, here and in the room over there. The materials are just tubing, the drinkers and some T-shaped connectors, and it was pretty easy to make. With more drinking spots, there should be enough water even on hot days. Rabbits, please let me know how you like it!

Around the playgrounds

The birds in the big chicken room dust-bathe so much that the ground is all bumpy, which keeps the soil soft and fluffy, and the camera-lovers gather around. The extended playground was a vegetable field until recently, so there are earthworms if you dig, but nobody seems to have noticed yet. The grass I expected them to eat up has become a good hiding place. Bee, you really like the room, don’t you?

Meet Moo-chan

Moo-chan put in a request, so I let him out. A walk? A fight? Something in between; he tends to come back a bit bloody. He got soaked in yesterday’s rain. Here’s your food, in the biggest container you’ve ever eaten from! When I opened the door, Pa-chan, who didn’t know any better, came closer, and Moo-chan gave a sort of half-threat. Scary guy!

Moo-chan seems to like this outdoor house, and he’s become much calmer lately. He still picks fights as quickly as ever, though, so he’s staying in this house for good. It’s in the bushes, so when a rooster loses a fight outside and dashes into the bushes, panting, Moo-chan emerges from the darkness and everyone shrieks. It’s a little funny. Moo-chan, please don’t scare them!
