Good morning from Pen-chan and me. It’s cloudy today.
A zebra dove in the net
I found a young zebra dove caught in a net. So tiny! I got it free. It didn’t seem to be hurt, but its feathers were all ruffled. Sorry, little one — are you OK? Then I asked it to go home. It did not go home.
Field trip: learning about goats
Today Chicken Paradise went on a field trip to study goats, and I finally got to meet them face to face. The kids run everywhere, and they are super cute!
One little goat is named Miracle. She’s a Nigerian Dwarf, a small breed of goat. She was born premature, with her right hind leg stuck, and she used to be much more frail. Now she has grown bigger and is full of energy. She was also very interested in my camera.
Then we went on a goat walk, with several goats on one rope. Miracle walks with her brothers and sisters, and she’s the only one who is a bit small. It really is a miracle that a premature baby has grown this much. When their mother arrived, it was time to move on.
The goats wandered all over the place, taking their time and making side trips, and one stopped to look right at the camera. Another was getting sleepy from the milk it had just drunk. Our destination was up the hill, but the goats didn’t seem keen on climbing, and I hear the walk takes longer every time.
Meet Ginger
Ginger is a wild chicken, and one of the culprits who had been stealing vegetables and raiding our garden. She turned out to be in much better health than I expected, without a single bug on her, and she was already getting along with everyone through the netting. So, a little earlier than usual, I decided she would sleep in the same coop as the other chickens. Now she runs around with everyone during the day and sleeps alongside them at night.
She’s a real mystery. She almost looks tame, but I’m pretty sure that’s an act.
As for her name: in Japanese, ginger is “shoga,” and “Shoga-chan” sounded too funny, so Ginger it is. Her feathers have a sparkly, ginger-like color, and when I saw ginger powder in the kitchen, I thought, “That’s it!”
Thank you for watching Chicken Paradise, and please keep watching over Ginger! See you in the next episode.
