Phew, that was heavy! Dinner’s ready — and everyone ran away. Sorry, sorry! Good morning from Chicken Paradise Hawaii. Another blue sky today.
Chicks first
Today I had a little extra time before letting the adult chickens out, so I let the chicks out first. But they all went into the cage and had a great time in there instead.
When the adults are around, the chicks get scared and can’t always go where they want. So if you let them out first, they happily hop off wherever they like. Not going outside? Oh well. Marron, you’ve grown!
Then I tried some slow-motion shots. Here’s our leader, Heart — nothing unusual to report today. Mugi is getting bigger, everyone’s drinking water, and there are so many funny faces.
A new feed for the hens
Today I switched to a new feed. It’s a layer feed made for egg-laying hens, with more protein and more calcium in the mix. We have lots of old hens, and even though they’re old they’re still laying eggs. That can lead to a calcium shortage, which makes their bones break more easily. I don’t want that, and some of our ladies are four, five and six years old — so I changed to this.
It looks just like our usual feed, so they should eat it. Ducks, you don’t have to eat this — it’s the hens’ food! Is anyone listening? Nobody’s listening. Oh well.
Here come the hens! Cutie, cute as ever today — is it tasty? Purin is here too; she’s one of our older sisters, so she should eat up. Then Bonbori, an even older sister — what do you think? Chico, you’re a rooster! Bug 2, want to try? Not sure? Shi-chan isn’t sure either, and seems put off by the ducks.
In the egg-layers’ room, the water was running a bit short, so I went to get more. Once I mixed the feed a little, it seemed to look more attractive and they started eating.
I also put the new feed dry into a bigger feeder — maybe it tastes better dry. The rest went into the room over there. That feeder drops food down from above, so it will take about a day before the new feed comes through.
Thank you for watching Chicken Paradise Hawaii! See you in the next video. Bye-bye — and bye-bye, Dolly, too.
