Look, everyone, there’s nothing left! You’re all full anyway, aren’t you?
Dust baths and broody girls
The half-grown chicks are dust bathing in the best spot. Marron and friends used to bathe right here too. The sand is so good that even an adult hen has come over. This is the leader of the egg team. She’s broody, so she’s a bit grumpy and keeps making a low growl. Parsley is broody too, so she sits here all the time. And Salaryman laid a beautiful blue egg. Good job!
For the first time in a while, a visit to the guinea pig house. I keep five males together, and they get along very well. I gave them a haircut with clippers the other day, and it has already grown out a lot. I’ll book the next appointment! Meanwhile Iroha wants to play with Natsu, but Natsu looks like she can’t be bothered.
Meet Gin-chan
This is an Old English Game Bantam hen, in what I think is called silver duckwing (a breed? a pattern?): six-and-a-half-year-old Gin-chan. Quite a long introduction!
Until recently, the back of her head was completely bald, but the feathers have come back. No longer bald! Her other feathers have been replaced too, and now she’s glossy and beautiful. I pulled her out of her sleeping spot to film her, so she has a look that says, “Why am I suddenly here?” It’s okay. She’s very used to people.
Gin-chan is one of our early members. She came with Kin-chan, as our seventh or eighth bird. She was already a year and a half old and laying eggs then, so I don’t really know her true age. I hope she lives a nice long life. She’s been laying lately too, and she’s doing great. Thanks for appearing!
Around the playground
When someone is peering into a bucket, it feels like there must be something good inside. The chickens love high places, so the stepladder has become a chicken stand. This is a popular dust-bathing spot: everyone digs together, the sand gets better, and it gets even more popular.
Today’s pigeon house: on the right, our champion, Star. On the left, Ilima, the very first chick rescued after coming to this farm. Super beautiful, and such long legs! Star, lately there are plenty of long-legged, slim hens just your type, but you still like Nuts best, don’t you? Nuts and Purin are good friends. And here’s Nuts’ bottom.
I think this is a banana flower. Will they eat it? They sniff it… this one wasn’t a hit.
Thanks for spending a slow day with us at Chicken Paradise Hawaii. See you next time!
