Good morning! Do you like it up there? Good morning to you, too.
Look how big they got
In Episode 70 we introduced the chicks that came to us from a friend’s house. Well, they’ve grown up to be this big! Next to a pigeon, you can see the size difference at a glance. So big!
Here’s the first one, and there are three more down below. Oh, they’re coming down — everyone’s coming down. These kids are all siblings. So cute!
The fluffy beard gene
The one on the far left seems to have inherited the beard gene. It’s fuzzy, like a black beard and mustache. This is a gene you don’t find in wild chickens. Someone among their ancestors — a grandpa or grandma, maybe — carried this fluffy gene, and when two birds with the fluffy gene breed, some of their chicks come out fluffy. (What on earth am I talking about? Bear with me.)
Oh, and underneath there’s a hen who looks a little troubled. She actually came from the same place. She’s a relative, and she has the fluffy-cheek gene too — see? All the birds around here come from the same bloodline, and yet they’re split into kids with beards and kids without.
They all have a face like they’ve never seen a camera before. You have, though!
The others are… sort of tell-apart-able, sort of not. They aren’t tame yet, so they don’t have names. For now, this group is three rooster brothers, plus Melona and her older sister. Please don’t step on people! Everyone, keep growing big. And where are you all off to together?
Meet Melona
The orange one on the far right is a girl, and she has one sister. She’s lovely. Her name is Melona.
Part of the reason is that she’s orange, like the orange ice cream bar of the same name. The other part: when she got hurt, I put her in a box, and the only box I had at the time was one of those ice cream boxes. “Oh look, her name’s already written on it!” A silly idea, and that’s how she became Melona. Isn’t she cute?
Thank you for watching Chicken Paradise! See you in the next episode.
