Hello from the farm! Another blue-sky day, humid and hot. Good morning, Fifi! Fifi answers back every time I speak. Then Natsu the cat showed up, and a tug-of-war over me broke out: jealous Fifi on one side, Natsu wanting to show who’s on top on the other. I could have used a few more hands!
Like parent, like child
This is one of Grey’s sons, and his face looks exactly like his father’s. He has no long rooster tail feathers. They aren’t cut; they simply aren’t there. His feathers are a glossy purple-black. He, his brothers and sisters, and the chicks we picked up all get along. Fifi stays right beside me the whole time, which is why you can hear her all through this part.
This one was supposed to be a Silkie when we got it as a newly hatched chick. It doesn’t look like a Silkie at all, and that’s fine by me.
The pure-white one is Chive’s grandson, Julietta’s son, born this year. Blue eyes and almost all-white feathers, just like Chive. Okki-chan’s head looks a little grey these days; Okki-chan’s feather color changes slightly with every molt (when birds shed and regrow their feathers).
After a little rain
Chickens love slightly damp ground, and Peanut Butter was happily buried in the sand. Frankie is popular with the older hens. The roosters were on alert about something. And here’s Chako and Marron together, the first two-shot in a while: Chako seems to have finally stopped sitting on the nest. Good for you, Marron!
Are chickens gourmets? A fruit test
We tried three kinds of fruit. First, grapes bought on sale, which were sour. “Here are grapes, everyone, help yourselves!” They normally love grapes, but they held back. They ate some, but without much excitement.
Next, sweet grapes. Now they came running: yes, that’s the usual reaction! They really do prefer the sweet ones. Last, very sweet bananas from the farm. What a difference in energy! Bananas are the all-time favorite, sand or no sand. The verdict: chickens can definitely taste the difference.
Cool and breezy
A shower-like rain left the ground just right for dust bathing. A bit windy, but nice and cool. Guava has grown quite big and is busy hunting for bugs. Hiyo-chan has turned quite yellow and is hard at work again, standing lookout beside Sonatine. Inside the room, Iruka keeps everyone well guarded and is really starting to look the part.
Thank you for watching Chicken Paradise Hawaii. See you in the next episode!
