Bedtime for 200 Chickens: How Does Everyone Get Back Inside?

Watch the episode (in Japanese)

Good morning! There’s a guard on duty here. Good morning to you, too.

Parsley and Natsu

Parsley’s face keeps getting whiter and whiter. Soon it’ll be completely white. Parsley, what’s going on? How white can it get? She herself is in a great mood, happily pecking at a chicken.

It’s so hot! Drink your water, everyone. Natsu has a new opponent: is that Sugar? Done already? One glare and that’s it? Oh, okay. And Niji and Natsu are at it again. Niji looks a little like Pen-chan, so maybe Natsu thinks chickens of that color are ones to watch out for. You’re all the same, you know!

How the flock goes to bed

During the day, the chickens are free in the playground. As evening comes, they go back to their rooms whenever they like and climb onto the perches to sleep. Lots are already up there. Chickens can’t see in the dark, so they move to their beds while it’s still light.

The best spots go to the highest-ranking hens, so newcomers tend to sleep on the lower perches. There are big and small perches, so everyone can choose. When to go in is up to each chicken, and some would play forever. We used to herd them in with a “magic wand,” but lately they head in on their own in the evening.

This is the big kids’ room. There are fewer of them, so there’s more space, and some sleep in the nest boxes. Plenty of hens are still outside. The guinea fowl stay out in the playground, and a duck sleeps outside too, as our night security — strong, kind and reliable.

The birds climb up from this step and then shuffle to a better spot. Sometimes newcomers get knocked off, but they learn the room’s rules and eventually settle in. Some fly straight up without the step. Going up seems to take courage, and watching them hesitate is interesting, but the steps make it easier.

Once most are in, I bring back the ones who forgot to go home and guide them to their rooms. Gradually everyone moves onto a perch. Finally, I count heads. Basil wants to come in, so I ask him to leave, close the door, and that’s it for the day.

Thanks for watching Chicken Paradise! Episode 26 is worth a look, too. See you next time.
