For our 60th episode, a look back at the day it all began. On February 24, 2022, we successfully signed the papers to lease our land. We borrowed a truck from a good friend and headed out to start building a new chicken coop.
First day on the land
The weather was beautiful. We drove down an unpaved road past lots of banana trees, and we arrived. Dolly ran off right away. And Pen-chan, as always, was with me.
This is how it started: grass as tall as me growing everywhere, with small yellow flowers. The owner had mowed a little, but out here a mower is a must. We mowed space for two chicken coops — 20 minutes of mowing, carry the grass out, repeat. Even so, only the pathway was done, and I wondered if we could finish in one day. Dolly hadn’t seen people come in for a long time, so she was a little curious about everyone.
Planning and shopping
Next came materials, from a big home improvement store where contractors shop too. I had looked up what I needed beforehand, and I’d prepared a 3D model as the blueprint. That way you can spot problems in advance, you don’t get lost on site, and you buy only what you need, with no mistakes. When I told the clerk I was building a chicken coop, it turned out he liked chickens, and we had a nice talk. People passing by asked if I was building a house!
These materials were bought with support for the project. Thank you so much to everyone who supported us.
Building and moving day
We were building a 240 cm × 240 cm structure. There was no time to clear the floor, so we built it as it was, with just a few people. Dolly was eating the whole time. Slowly it came together, and the day ended with a beautiful sunset.
I was given a case for carrying chickens, and I caught them one at a time — three hours just to load everyone. A little tight, but they bore with it. Then: your new home! Out came the big boy, then the little ones. The cages we used before were moved over too. The playground has been expanded, and we’re mowing to open up more usable space.
The first stage of the plan is complete. Thank you for moving, everyone — enjoy your new home! And thank you for watching Chicken Paradise.
