Fancy New Pigeons Arrive — and a Bathing Spot at Last

Watch the episode (in Japanese)

Bok choy for the rabbits

The bok choy we grow here is just for the tortoises, but their mouths are too small to eat the cores. So the cores go to the rabbits. Somebody, please come out! It’s hot, they say. Okay, okay — by request, I’ll open the lid. Here you go!

They’re eating! But it’s hot, so if I keep the lid open too long for filming, they get angry. Don’t fight over it. Some of them like it and some don’t — the ones who don’t just ignore it. Ohana loves fresh vegetables. She eats flowers too, which is why her name is Ohana. As expected!

And under the rabbit hutch is Natsu. Natsu, I can never tell if you want to be inside or outside.

A bathing spot for the pigeons

The pigeons are in a big panic. I did some more research on pigeons recently and realized — silly me — that I’d forgotten to give them a place to bathe. So today they get one. Whoa, it tipped over from the weight; the floor is a bit bumpy. Shall I put it away from people? There you go, here’s your water.

Everyone was too scared with me there, so I filmed again from outside. Oh! Someone’s getting in! It’s started — the bathing party has begun! And the young ones are so cute. Pigeons don’t take dust baths like chickens, but they do bathe in water. It turned into something like soup. Their feathers are so waterproof! I think they need a second container.

New family members

The two big pigeons on the ground with feathers on their feet are new. We took them in from an animal welfare organization. I saw pigeons on their website, and these two seemed to be a pair. I felt it would be sad to separate them, so I went to pick them up.

The fancy one up top is another stylish breed. It also has feathered feet, and its feathers themselves are curly. It was with the pair, so I think it’s probably family, and I brought it home too. I wasn’t planning to add more pigeons, but I just felt so sorry for them.

Right now the pigeons are in breeding season again and courting hard, so when a human comes in they panic a little and wouldn’t cooperate with filming. But from outside, I could see they were having a proper party. Welcome, new family! And I’ll add more bathing spots. Sorry I forgot!
