Farm Notes — February 2024: Growing Kittens, a Wild Peacock and a Double-Yolk Surprise

Every few days we post a short clip from the farm on YouTube. Here are all twenty-nine from February in one place — tap any of them to play it right here.

Kittens and cats

Ao, one of our farm cats, kept watch over a chick. Three kittens went wild over a new toy, and kittens Mei and Hana are getting bigger. A cat ate some hamburger (we know it’s not really allowed!), and Salmon, our chubby cat, tried to hide — head first.

Cozy cats, windy days

Some relaxed cats asked to be petted, and Ao and Sapphire were puzzled by strong winds. Shimako and Ao, sister and brother, are as close as can be, and Salmon was caught eating straight from the food storage.

Roosters and their quirks

Rida, a rooster, looked very comfortable being petted. One chicken loves cat food so much we had to ask if it’s really a cat, and rooster Sunday gave cat food a try, too. Rex played us a rooster fanfare, and when I showed a chicken a video of chickens, she got mad at me.

Hens, eggs and snack time

A hen freezes for a moment right after laying an egg — so cute. We also peeked into our mealworm factory (sorry if you don’t like bugs!), the chickens crowded in for snack time, and the chicken road went on and on. Lavender, a little bantam hen, couldn’t quite cover all her eggs, our colorful hens lay colorful eggs, and a long, thin egg turned out to hold a double yolk.

Ducks, pigeons and a peacock

The ducks held a debate — with everyone talking at once. We spotted a beautiful wild peacock, and Happy has a hearty appetite and is doing well on pigeon beans. Basil snuggled up to Mitarashi, proof that a chicken and a duck can be good friends, and at a hotel in Waikiki we met a duck and a very friendly chicken.

Bunnies and tortoises

Our bunnies enjoyed all the fresh grass they could eat. The big red-footed tortoises had bath time, and our 7-kilogram tortoise turned out to be surprisingly fast.
