Every few days we post a short clip from the farm on YouTube. Here are all thirty-one from March in one place — tap any of them to play it right here. The chickens were still living indoors because of bird flu, and we were counting down to the day the doors could open.
Life indoors
The chickens were still living indoors to keep bird flu away, and we were telling each other to hang on just a little longer. Fresh lettuce is their favorite snack, a sand bath after a meal is a real treat, and one spot is always packed for reasons I can’t explain. Look closely and you’ll see their eyes come in many colors — most of ours have orange irises.
Our hens
Can you tell look-alikes Luna and Lunaniko apart? Tanpopo has the cutest fluffy tail, Lilac and Kinako are small and sweet, Reg-chan the Leghorn has a big comb and good looks, and Tsuki is a beauty too. Monarch’s way to refresh herself is digging in the ground — but she can be scary, and Mikan may have been trying to tell me that her big sister Chobi was in trouble. And two fluffy hens, Macaron and Castella, will spend the rest of their lives here with us.

Eggs and nests
Shizuka laid an egg too, in a lovely color, and little Ivory laid a little egg of her own. I caught the very moment Goldie, with her beautiful feathers, laid hers. The hens sitting on nests were all in a grumpy mood, and I found a tiny “fairy egg,” even smaller than a quail’s egg.

The rooster corner
Maybe roosters want to try nesting too — Inazuma gave it a go. Our “uncle” roosters may or may not be good friends, Cloud likes to ride on my arm (slow down eating, or you’ll choke!), and Rida, Heart’s son, is a reminder that life carries on. Then there’s Charles, who has fallen for the goose — good luck, Charles!
Fifi and the farm cats
Fifi the goose loves lettuce and comes when I call her; she’s a spoiled sweetheart, too — cute, but heavy. The farm cats offered to help with the work (thank you, but a cat’s paw isn’t much help), kept watch over the eggs, and Captain Natsu kept the farm peaceful once again. One cat even had its eye on a cute little bright-green guy.

Hawaii’s wild neighbors
Out in the wild in Hawaii, pigs and chickens live side by side. We also spotted a peacock — a bird once loved by Hawaiian royalty.
Thanks for following along with life at Chicken Paradise. New clips go up every few days on our YouTube channel.
