Farm Notes — November 2024: Grey’s Grown-Up Kids, Easter Eggers and Happa the Mimic

Every few days we post a short clip from the farm on YouTube. Here are all thirty from November 2024 in one place — tap any of them to play it right here.

Hens, moms and little ones

Grey’s children, born in the spring, have graduated from peeping, and their mom is the beautiful hen Kuroi. Sadly, one young chick was abandoned — I couldn’t believe someone drove off and left this baby behind. On happier notes, a fluffy little hen had her moment, a hen got her name (Blueberry Donut!), and I finally introduced Hiyo-chan’s mom, a Leghorn mix.

Easter Egger beauties

A fine Easter Egger rooster joined us this month — nice to meet you! Handsome Sona Grey isn’t popular with the hens, but the boys like him, and he and Vicky make a beautiful Easter Egger pair. Auntie hen Suzume knows grooming matters, and a pair of Easter Egger sisters turned out to be shy.

The rooster corner

One rooster with a lovely comb shares his name with the god of reggae, and we named Nayuta with a wish — he’s a precious rooster. Big eater Dyson is starting to look like a real rooster, Mister’s drooping comb is his trademark, and Hare-chan has a great crow (turn the volume down!). Shizuku is another precious rooster, Flute is a trusty one who protects everyone, and Inazuma is a Silkie-mix rooster with a mysterious style; meanwhile a shy rooster needed the duck to be gentle with him.

Life in the flock

Everyone gathered for another day of doing their best. A chicken’s feather color can change, and every color is beautiful. The chickens seem to love messy spots (I need to tidy up quickly!), food turns out to be the secret of a happy flock, and I simply love watching them dig in the ground.

Cats, a parakeet, a duck and a goose

Cats may be free spirits, but our farm cats are hard workers — and nothing beats them for keeping rats away. Happa, our ring-necked parakeet, does an amazingly good goat impression. Ringo the duck and Fifi the goose live peacefully alongside the chickens, and kitten Kuma has made friends with a tortoise.
