Farm Notes — September 2024: Retired Hens, Handsome Roosters and Natsu on Duty

Every few days we post a short clip from the farm on YouTube. Here are all thirty from September 2024 in one place — tap any of them to play it right here.

Life in the flock

The chickens love their mash — you can tell right away when it isn’t there. Chickens are smart: they recognize many faces, take care of their friends, and like the dishes they’ve used for a long time. Every chicken has its own story, they share a lot of happy time with us, and one got a delicious-sounding name just from its looks. I also built some shade for everyone — I did my best!

Hens, big and growing

Retired hens found a welcome at Chicken Paradise this month, and on hot days some hens hardly wanted to move. Pearl showed how good chickens are at finding a cozy spot, a bantam and an egg-laying hen proved that very different birds can be good friends, and shiny Wakame came to us from a parking lot. The youngsters kept growing — some still acting like chicks, one who used to be the small one. Aurora got injured and was under treatment, and we were all wishing her well.

The rooster corner

A wild rooster made it clear he doesn’t like cameras, and another has a very large comb for his small body. A rooster came back out of his cage (no more fighting, please!), and an Easter Egger rooster turned out seriously handsome. Palolo, once a wild rooster, has a cool comb; we also met a rooster at a farmers’ market and wondered where he came from. One rooster’s crow sounded so strange we asked if he’d caught a cold, Cloud is a naughty three-year-old, and the mid-level roosters got a little crowded — but peaceful.

Cats, neighbors and parakeets

The welcome committee wasn’t only our own animals — the neighbors’ goats and sheep came too. The cats were puzzled when Cheese the rooster interrupted their meal, and on blue-sky days each cat spends the time in its own way. The parakeets were lovey-dovey the whole time. And thanks to Natsu and her farm-cat work, things stay peaceful here.
