Good morning from Julietta and her ducklings! I leave the parenting to Julietta, but now and then she lets me do a quick health check. That pond is getting small for them.
Remembering Sonata
Sonata, who was on the cover of this year’s calendar, recently crossed the rainbow bridge to join Heart and the others. He was especially close to Luna, so I named him after Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata.” He was a strong, gentle rooster, and even after giving up his place as leader of the big ones’ room, he was always surrounded by hens. I will never forget his ringing tenor cock-a-doodle-doo. Grey, who is very popular with the hens lately, is still going strong.
A new rooster
At the feed store’s back area, I spotted a rooster of the same breed as Sonata, in grey. Where did you fly down from? Meeting him now feels like fate.
Chicks sold as hens are about 95% hens, but around 5% turn out to be roosters, and many of those boys get returned. I once missed the chance to buy a black rooster of this breed, so this time I decided on the spot. He may be over a year old. Roosters of this breed are very gentle, and no one is leading our big hens right now, so I hope he’ll get along with them. He’s certainly keen!
The cat room
Our farm cats live outside, but the cat room is for cats who can’t go out, because of illness or other reasons, and for newcomers getting used to the place. Kanata lives here, and now the cats who had been staying at my house have joined.
Astro, a tuxedo cat, was a stray a friend fed every day. He turned out to have a microchip, and he’s now a farm cat until his people come for him in a few years. Fuku and Yuki, the feral brothers from our Shorts, disliked people, so no one adopted them. Now certain people can pet them, but bringing Yuki here earned me a cat punch and a bite. Hana, Lucky’s daughter born at my house, and her sister Mei will live here too. Denki will soon go outside to train under Natsu.
Banana harvest
A banana plant isn’t a tree but a giant herb, and this one was about 4 meters tall. Boo the goat cheered us on. We pictured it crashing down, but it just wouldn’t fall. Pushing, leaning, getting caught on the plant in front… try pulling? It snapped! Look how big the bunch grew. It will turn yellow in a few days.
Thank you for watching Chicken Paradise Hawaii. See you in the next episode!
