New Goats, Then We Dig: Grubs and Worms Galore for the Flock

Watch the episode (in Japanese)

Hello from Chicken Paradise Hawaii, where I’m being filmed without asking, mid–spam musubi! Today the sky is a little bit blue and a little bit cloudy. Most of this episode is told in captions, so sit back and enjoy the digging.

New members

First, some new members: we took in a mother goat and her kid. Will they be friends with Yagisuke? Right now Yagisuke looks a bit troubled. We’re starting with a snack strategy and taking it slowly.

Treasure hunt

We’ve had less rain lately and the ground has dried out, so I dug it up. The soil is just moist enough, and the chickens’ droppings feed it, so it’s very good soil. Dig a little and the bugs come pouring out. Everyone is lost in the treasure hunt.

The front line is the hens, who don’t mind getting covered in dirt. “Anything tasty?” Namonakimono finds treasure first. Glico came too but couldn’t get to the front. June beetle grubs are hugely popular — first come, first served — and they look like little white candies. Today Ilima is very pushy: I wanted to give one to Glico, but Ilima took it. Go, Glico! Pearl and Soy kept a good spot, everyone got pushed aside by Ilima, and Hiyo-chan and Rex watched from a bit behind. Soy, what’s wrong? The camera person isn’t holding anything!

Good for them

Next I dug the play area. Cho came right over, not bothered by the shovel at all, then Okki-chan and Hachimitsu. The ground is harder here, with lots of stones, so I let the chickens help.

Soil has minerals and good bacteria that help keep chickens healthy. They seem to know it and eat what’s good for them. It really impresses me. And the laying hens are so fluffy!

With Cho, we moved somewhere else. Ryu stayed wary — maybe a first time seeing a big shovel? Chanel and Tiffany were curious, Cho showed them how it’s done, and Salaryman came too. Once the shovel moved on, everyone gathered.

Worms under the duck pool

(Worm warning!) Under the duck pool it’s wet, so there are lots of earthworms. Mint and Rosemary didn’t care about the shovel at all. Worms are a feast, slurped up like pasta. Sumire joined in, then Sugar, who for some reason treats the ducks as rivals. More ducks came over, digging neatly with their bills. There’s plenty more!

In the little ones’ room, the hole is already filled in and the soil is lovely and soft. After digging, enjoy a dust bath! Seeing the chickens so comfortable makes me happy.

Thanks for watching Chicken Paradise! See you in the next episode.
