A new egg tray
Today I went to a new feed store for the first time. While chatting with the man there, I spotted this red plastic egg tray and asked how much it was. He said it was a new product and very cheap, so I should take one and try it. I gratefully took it home.
It holds 30 eggs, five by six — the same size as the paper trays we always use. The egg holes look small, but the label says it fits up to XL eggs. Really? Let’s test it.
Eggs, please!
First, small eggs. Eggs, please! Pop — a perfect fit for tiny eggs, and for extra-small ones too. Our chickens are funny, so some lay outside the nest boxes. I’ll take that one!
Then there’s the team that has made a nest under the table for some reason. Not all of them are laying — some are just sitting on eggs to keep them warm. They plan to sit until the eggs hatch, but because I collect the eggs so they won’t hatch, they sit there forever. Go take a break!
Next, the big eggs in the big room. Sorry, Poppy 2. Brownie, you need a break too. Hi, Marshmallow — sorry, you just went in. And Okki-chan, everyone’s scared of you!
Eggs are stored pointy side down, but many of ours are oddly shaped, so it’s hard to tell which end is which. In that case, shine a light through them in the dark and you can usually tell.
The tray turned out surprisingly stable — I could shake it and nothing moved. For the last challenge, a duck egg. Chive wants to sit on eggs that will never hatch. Trying to intimidate me? You’re cute. The duck egg sits a little high and wobbles a bit, but it looks okay. This tray might get the job!
Strawberry tasting
It’s been a while since we’ve had strawberries, so I harvested a few. One was so thick it looked like triplets. Some are sour, some are sweet — hit and miss — though this one turned sweet afterward. Dolly was looking at me hungrily, so I offered her one I’d nibbled. Nope — too sour. She just blew her nose at me and left. The rest went to the chickens.
