What’s This Called Again? Protecting Our Melons from Bugs

Watch the episode (in Japanese)

Good morning from Chicken Paradise. A little cloudy today. The play area feels wide now, Taro is relaxing, and the grass-party spots are popular. (Star, you don’t have to do the intro!)

Bugs in the melons

Lots and lots of bugs have found our melons. So today I’m going to fight back using this… what’s it called again? Non-woven fabric! (Thanks for the cue card.) I’m going to put it over the fruit and tie it, so the bugs can’t get in.

First, I cut off the fruit that has rotted. See — it’s rotten. The fruit is rotting, poor thing.

Some of you will be able to see it: insects lay their eggs through this little hole, and the fruit gets eaten from the inside out. I really don’t like that. This part is dead… and this area looks pretty much gone too. The color is properly melon-like, but inside it’s spongy and hollow. Poor melon.

Glico and the mugwort

Meanwhile: Glico, don’t dig up the yomogi (Japanese mugwort)! The yomogi is important.

A cradle for a melon

The plant I cut earlier had gone limp, and there was no fruit on it big enough to protect. So instead, I’m going to protect this one over here.

The fabric is huge, so I cut a piece to size, wrapped the fruit and tied it on lightly with string. Is this really going to be enough? Somehow, I’ve made a little cradle for the melon. Please grow!

Elsewhere, there’s another egg in the new nest box, and Happy is hanging out with the quail.

Thank you so much for watching Chicken Paradise — and wish our little melon luck. See you in the next video!
