Farm Notes — June 2023: A Young Mother Cat, Five Kittens and Gudetama the Chick

Every few days we post a short clip from the farm on YouTube. Here are all forty-seven from June in one place — it was a very kitten-heavy month! Tap any of them to play it right here.

A young mother cat and her newborns

At the start of June, a mother cat just 10 months old gave birth to kittens. One of the newborns weighed only 118 grams (4.16 oz). The new mom loved her babies and worried over them, and we learned why a mother cat rumbles — and just how big Mom looks next to her tiny kittens.

Eyes open, claws out

On day eleven, the kittens’ eyes opened. Soon came wobbly little punches, kittens doing things their own way, and baby claws that are always out. Here’s a look at their faces, a mother cat’s job, and Mom and kittens meowing together — five kittens in all, and so cute.

The grown-up cats

The older cats kept busy too. There was a strong cat punch, Meeko the black cat, two cat sisters relaxing, a cat who called me to follow along, another who loves the sound of grass, and Madara and Hanabi together. A black cat got some guidance from a senior cat, one cat played with Shimako’s tail, and one was very cross about a disturbed nap. We ended the month with a pat under a blue sky.

Chickens and chicks

A one-day-old chick was named Gudetama. Sonata is big now, one very tame chicken likes to sit on my lap, and a hen took time to groom her feathers. Walmart’s injuries have healed, some chicks fought back, and the dogs met the chicks. Plus: was that a chicken giving birth underwater?

Dogs, pigeons and other friends

June opened with rabbits everywhere. We spotted pigeons with eyebrows, a dog digging for something, and a dog who really, really wanted the cats’ food. There was also some Papaya Sunshine, a bit of sleeping kung fu, a wild rose-ringed parakeet, and a few more clips that speak for themselves.
