Farm Notes — March 2024: Nest Box Rush Hour, Flute All Grown Up and Our Goat Family

Every few days we post a short clip from the farm on YouTube. Here are all thirty-one from March in one place — tap any of them to play it right here.

Glico and Flute

Glico seemed to have something to tell us — so cute! Flute politely held back for Cho, and Glico, a booted bantam, is beautiful from every angle. Flute was once a cute little chick; three years later he’s a handsome rooster with a fine cock-a-doodle-doo.

Nest box rush hour

A duck sitting on her eggs got mad when I peeked in. Over in the chicken coop, it’s broody season and the nest boxes are in demand: Mikan and Kuromame fought over one, a packed box even had a rooster in it, and others had to wait in line. One box was far too crowded even though there’s a lower level, too — are the private rooms only for VIPs?

Everyday flock life

Guinea fowl and hens soaked up the sun together, and one chicken’s big sand bath landed on the neighbor. The chickens relaxed in the evening, and some broke into an ant nest and got bitten on the legs — lots of flapping! To close the month: our many different chickens. Is everyone happy?

Young roosters growing up

Young rooster Udon jumped up asking for bananas, and Haku and Ryu have grown bigger. Chanel the hen tried pears for the first time, only to have Ryu take them away. Young Nishiki called the older hens over to something tasty and seems to have won their approval, and Tiffany and Haku, a young hen and rooster, wanted a taste too.

The cat corner

Time for flea treatment — pardon the interruption while everyone’s eating! The farm cats gave us a warm welcome, beautiful sisters Shimako and Madara posed together, and Madara rolled around on her break. And Ao wanted to help mow the grass.

Our goats

Yagiko and Yagisuke, parent and child, are close. The goats worked hard mowing the grass (thank you!) and followed me back to the goat shed. Boo and Ghost love apples, and Yagisuke is now five months old.
