Farm Notes — July 2025: The Cerberus Silkies, Summer Eggs and Two Mischievous Cats

Every few days we post a short clip from the farm on YouTube. Here are all eighteen from July in one place — tap any of them to play it right here.

The rooster corner

Cerberus, our silkie roosters, are such good friends that they never leave each other’s side — and since each one is a little different, here’s how to tell them apart. Yamabuki has become a kinder rooster, with Luna’s seal of approval, and Peach keeps growing finer and has earned the trust of the older hens. Charles is a very friendly fellow (just please don’t scream right there!), one young rooster got turned down, and I want to say it plainly: roosters have a right to live too, and they are wonderful.

Eggs in the heat

Because of the heat, the hens have been laying in all sorts of places, which makes egg collecting a lively hunt. One bird’s eggs are seriously hard. Even on hot days the hens keep laying for us — thank you, hens — including the cute eggs of a cute silkie mix hen.

Guinea fowl, a little chick and snack time

Our young guinea fowl are growing up, and they love leaves. One day a tiny life called out to me: a cute little black chick. Food tastes better when everyone eats together — a happy way to beat the heat — and the chickens are sure that whatever a person is holding looks delicious, even when it’s the same as always.

Cats on the farm

Sometimes the farm looks like a field trip, with a cat, a rooster and the guinea fowl out together. Angel is a pure white angel who looks sweet but loves mischief, and Genki is a clumsy cat who wants to get in but just can’t manage it.
