Good morning from Chicken Paradise Hawaii. Another blue sky today. Here comes someone flying — let’s see that in slow motion. You fly so well for such a big bird! One of the middle chicks noticed the camera and froze.
Ducklings and roosters
When I opened the ducklings’ house, they went IN instead of out. Normally it’s OUT! Oh, your wings are coming in. So cute — and all a bit dirty. They came out in a single line, and soon there were ducks everywhere. One has thick legs; I wonder if it’s a male.
Grey and Heart, the leader, looked ready to fight, but Grey felt the pressure and backed off. No pointless fights.
Garden news
We put sprinklers in the front garden, and a timer turns the water on regularly. That should help keep the bananas healthy too. And all the cucumber seeds have sprouted — one, two, three, four, five, six! They’re still tiny and weak, but they’re up. Shoo, weeds! I’ve never worried about weeds so much in my life. I need to prepare the next garden soon.
Feed day
I’m filling the feed container. One bag is about 23 kg (50 lb), and I buy around six bags at a time. Feed costs about 1.5 times what it used to. But vegetables alone aren’t enough to keep the birds healthy, so we need feed like this. The laying spot is crowded today, too — naturally, the hens want to lay their eggs.
Meet our newcomer
Once again, I’ve picked up an abandoned rooster. There was tape wrapped around his leg, so I think he was kept as a fighting rooster. He moves just like Kirin did — dragging his leg. (Meanwhile, Kirin is happily taking a sand bath. Sorry, sorry.)
This rooster drags his leg, and I think it’s probably broken. His spurs were cut off, because fighting birds have them cut so a blade can be attached. He’s thin and ragged. He was dumped and looked dazed, so for now I caught him to keep him safe.
When I first caught him, he went limp, flipped over and stopped moving, and I thought he had died. But after I gave him some food, he started to recover. Why do roosters just get dumped like this? Get well soon, new guy.
Thank you for watching Chicken Paradise Hawaii! See you in the next video.
