Parsley is growing up
Parsley, you’ve gotten so big! Parsley comes when I call, but gets scared when I walk over. So cute. Parsley’s body looks much more like a duck’s now, and the moves are a duck’s too. Parsley loves eating grass — even tough grass. But the other ducks are scary. Well, Parsley grew up alone, so that can’t be helped.
Those mysterious little wing feathers that stayed small for so long have grown a lot. Once proper wing feathers come in, Parsley may be able to fly. Please don’t fly away! Parsley often makes a round, nest-like hollow and sits in it, even without laying eggs (yet). Keep growing, Parsley.
Morning rounds
Good morning! It’s windy today, and sunny again. Basil wanted to get into the room, so it was crowded. When I opened the chick room, some didn’t come out — a few new tenants have moved in and are getting special treatment in a private room.
A name at last
Everyone has been worried that this little one never seems to get bigger. We’ve been calling her the little black chick, and now she finally has a name: Niji, which means “rainbow.”
This is the original “Wobbly” chick, who isn’t wobbly at all anymore and stomps around instead. Wobbly grew up and became Chako. Chako is younger than Niji but much bigger now. You’ve gotten so big, it’s a little scary! Both of them will probably change color as they grow. I hope they grow up well and stay healthy for a long time — right, Niji? And by chance, there was a beautiful rainbow that day.
Meet Niji
Niji is older than she looks, so she’s good friends with Marron and the others her age. But she’s small, so she gets along with the little chicks too. I hope she’ll be a bridge between everyone — that’s why I named her Niji, “rainbow.”
She’s as tiny as ever: this is her next to my hand. She’s a few days older than Marron, so she’s already about two and a half to three months old, but she’s the size of a chick about three weeks old. That’s okay — she’s full of energy. Oh, did you find a bug? Suddenly you move like a real chicken.
And look at her feet: the toe that points backward looked strange from the start. It died off and fell away, so she has no back toes on either foot. It doesn’t get in the way of her digging, so that’s fine. Off you go on your bug hunt!
