Good afternoon! The ducks are making a huge fuss because the rain is so heavy. Chive is complaining like crazy.
The playground is a swamp
For the past few days, a week or so now, it has kept raining, on and off, on and off, and the ground in the coop’s playground has turned into a swamp.
It’s been about a year since Chicken Paradise moved to this land. We started renting it in mid-February last year, so exactly one year. Back then it was blazing sunshine, and I thought, “Oh, it’s hot here even in winter.” Apparently not: this year it’s pouring. And as you can see, chickens love mud, which backfires, because they stir it up and the swamp keeps spreading. Everyone has rings of mud around their ankles. It’ll probably sort itself out once the ground dries, so for now they can enjoy the mud. When the rain stops, I’ll lay down grass like last time to help it dry faster. Basil is wondering what to do too. And the duck pool is full to the brim even though I never filled it.
What do you think of the rain?
Chicken Paradise is in the mud today, but peaceful. I ask a nameless duck, Nashi (“pear”), and Rosemary behind them: what do you think of the rain? Rosemary is trying to eat grass. You young ones are only a little over six months old. The under-one-year team has never seen rain like this! Big sister Oreo, you’ve been through many rains. Bad this year? She’s more upset that no earthworms come up. At our old place, worms came out every time it rained. The guinea fowl look sharp, but they’re under a year old too, so they’re on the first-rain team. Cho, you’re so big!
Everyone, the rain will keep coming, so please cooperate: take shelter when it starts. Inside, the coop stays dry, so life goes on as usual.
Dinner for the broody girls
Hello, Maple. You’re not laying, you’re sitting on eggs; that temper gives you away. Take a break and eat! And you, the nameless one, you’ve been at it for ages. Time to stop. Ichigo is broody too: broody hens have bald bellies, so they’re easy to spot. Mikan… hmm, borderline. Yes, she’s sitting. Don’t! Eat properly! Nuts, are you four now? Five? I’ve lost track. Sorry!
Nami-chan, what’s wrong? The roosters have been rough lately. And some small hens, half-broody, have surrounded a big duck egg. Why do ducks lay their eggs on the ground instead of in nest boxes? Please don’t break it; I’ll come back for it later.
Thanks for watching Chicken Paradise Hawaii, and stay dry!
