Good morning. The weather is bad today. This hen was attacked by a dog and was rescued while lying flipped over on the road. The dog pulled out her tail feathers, but she’s surprisingly healthy.
Pouring rain
Hello from Chicken Paradise Hawaii! It’s raining like crazy today. Are the half-grown chicks okay? Rain is getting into their food bowl. This is Ko-chan, who I recently picked up beside the road. You’re a bit wet there! Everyone is sheltering from the rain in that grassy thicket. I need to cut that grass, but I’ll leave it until the rain stops.
These half-grown chicks are a real mix: some I caught outside, some came from very far away, some from next door. But they all seem to get along. On rainy days, they eat very little and hide.
Early to bed
The little ones’ room gets dark early, so everyone is already up on the perches getting ready for bed. Ace, why are you asleep already? Boba and Ilima too? Ivory says, “I hate the rain!” So does B-chan.
Big news about Nugget. I’d been unsure for a long time whether Nugget was a boy or a girl, and… she’s a girl! Just as many of you said. She’s the big-sister type, a hen with a slightly scary face, and I recently saw her laying an egg.
In the big kids’ room, everyone is up already too. This room used to be full of big hens, but some wild birds that arrived recently have claimed the spot, so the big hens stay outside until the last minute. The egg team is doing fine.
Squabbling ducks
Spring has come, and our male ducks have started fighting terribly. The bald patch on the back of this one’s head is from fighting. Long ago he was badly hurt, but nothing like that has happened lately, so maybe things are calming down a little. Sorry, our ratio of males to females just isn’t right.
The video also has a rainy-day photo gallery: Flute, Okki-chan, Heart and Star, Marron, Happy taking a bath, Kin-chan, Shachi, Chico, Kiwi, Tsuki and many more.
Standing tall in the rain
When chickens notice they’re getting wet, they all stand up tall like this. Trumpet, why are you standing so straight? Just take shelter! Squatting, standing tall: they all have interesting ideas for staying dry. They could just go inside…
Chive is really enjoying the rain: the chickens are quiet and the males are busy fighting, so nobody bothers Chive. Out in the rain and not even wet: amazing waterproofing! Ringo, you don’t like rain much, do you, even though you’re a duck.
That was a rainy-day update from Chicken Paradise. Everyone, stay out of the rain!
