Stormy Start to 2024 — but the Chickens Are Doing Fine

Watch the episode (in Japanese)

Hello from Chicken Paradise Hawaii. The weather is really bad right now.

Surprise tomatoes

The bananas are somehow still growing, but the wind has snapped so many of their leaves. Maybe thanks to all the rain, all sorts of things are sprouting. These are tomatoes — I didn’t plant them, did I, Ao? They just came up on their own, and they’re already flowering. They’re cherry tomatoes, so if they fruit, they’ll go to the chickens. There are lots of weeds the chickens will love, too, so I’ll pick some later. Madara and Shimako came to check out the jungle with me.

Riding out the storm

Then the storm really arrived and everything turned to mud. The ducks looked like they were having fun, though, with very serene faces.

Once it calmed down a little, the wind was still strong enough to make the banana plants rustle. The coops are fairly sheltered, so they come through better. Nature holds up well — the grass doesn’t fall over — but things people make do not, and plenty of things blew down. The chickens don’t care; they seem happy to use the fallen pieces as perches. As long as the rain stops, a bit of wind doesn’t stop them wandering around outside.

That not-quite-right crow was probably Rida. He won’t do it again while I’m filming, of course. Iruka has moved over to this side, and Ryu was there with Haku behind him. Poor Haku’s white tail has turned grey with mud.

We’ve had wind and rain like this several times already this year. Hawaii’s storm season usually comes a bit earlier, but this year it seems shifted. The mainland has been having unusual weather too. Lots is happening all over the world. When things settle down, I want to fix all this mud and make it comfortable again, but if I start now it will just get churned up again. Everyone seems in a decent mood, so please hang in there a little longer.

Full nest boxes

As usual, the nest boxes are full — even Gri-chan is sitting in one. I peeked under a few hens. Cutie has an egg. Shiratama has lots of them (sorry for calling you the wrong name — she got cross with me). I’ll come back for them later.

Tomoko’s face has filled out nicely. She’s getting her strength back, and I’m so glad.

Some boxes I leave alone: Kombu is scary, so no peeking there. Taiyo was scary too, and in the end had no egg at all. And a few eggs were just sitting on the ground. Funny hens.

Thank you for watching, and stay dry! See you in the next episode.
