A Chaotic Nest Box, Hand-Feeding Kuro, and a Lazy Day with the Flock

Watch the episode (in Japanese)

Hello from Pen-chan and me. It’s cloudy today.

The nest box traffic jam

The nest box was packed: Lavender, Pumpkin and Kombu, with Mikan wedged in the middle. What are you doing? That’s far too crowded! I moved a few of them out. Kombu pecked me — ouch. Kombu is fierce! Mikan, there’s an empty room over here for you. And that was today’s chaotic, crowded nest box.

Sango eats better with a friend

This is Sango, looking a little dirty today. Sango is such a big eater that waiting for food is impossible, and for some reason was facing the wrong way with a tail caught. Once everything was straightened out, food was served — and somehow a chick ended up on Sango’s head. A friend to eat with!

Sango already has a big appetite, but eats even more with someone close by, and looks so happy with company. Sango isn’t a tidy eater, though, so mealtimes come with lots of fuss and flapping.

Meet Kuro

One day when I went to buy feed, I saw about eight chicks, three or four weeks old, abandoned outside the shop and crying loudly. I was told someone who couldn’t keep their rescued wild chickens anymore had released them, so I caught them all and took them home. Many were sick, and quite a few died, but Kuro survived. Kuro, a hen, and Piccolo are sister and brother — the only two who made it.

Kuro has always been delicate, and recently she got quite sick and lost a lot of weight. So today I hand-fed her to make sure the food really went in. She ate so much that you can see her full tummy bulging! Once this is digested and turned into energy, I hope she’ll start eating on her own again from the next meal. Please get well, Kuro.

A lazy day with the chickens

Chobi was wandering around complaining, probably looking for a place to lay. Ai-chan, our ivory-colored hen, was busy digging. Mikan jumped down from somewhere high, and the worried roosters, Chico and Pineapple, cried out.

This is Kuromame, who looks just like Kombu but is a different bird. They really are look-alikes. Everyone’s favorite, Gin-chan, was too busy heading to a meeting of the little chickens to say a word. Glico came back; she and Purin are good friends. Ai-chan is older than Glico, so she should be the stronger one. Kuro was just spacing out, and Glico has been sneezing a little lately.

That’s all for our lazy time with the chickens. Thank you for watching Chicken Paradise, and see you in the next episode!
