Good morning from Pen-chan and me! Sango’s food fell on the floor this morning, and Sango just glared at it in silence — a very quiet complaint.
Meet Jack and Beanstalk
Today’s chicken corner has two roosters: Jack and Beanstalk. Please forgive the names — they don’t make much sense. These two are brothers of Hare-chan and Cheese. They look nothing at all like Hare-chan, but they do look like each other, with similar combs and similar colors.
When they were little, Beanstalk was a whitish-yellow chick, just like Hare-chan and the others. Jack, on the other hand, was an ordinary brown chick, so I was sure he would grow into a reddish rooster. Instead, for some reason, he turned into a beautiful white rooster with black lines in his feathers.
Jack used to be the weaker one. Now he’s far stronger than everyone else and has become a rather fearsome presence. Right now, though, he’s terribly scared of the camera. There are two more siblings in this family, and I’ll introduce them later.
The mystery hole
The chickens have been secretly digging holes in odd places. What is this? Let’s ask the birds who just happen to be standing nearby.
Nuts, why is there a hole here? Apparently not a clue. Lavender, do you know how this hole got here? “No idea.” Nana, screaming over there — any thoughts? No comment. Everyone just stares into the camera as if to say nobody knows anything. So who dug this hole? The case remains open.
A banana party
Next, I gave the rest of the bananas to the little ones. Once I’d peeled one, Chico, ever the gentleman, called everyone over: “There’s something tasty here!” (Chico, that’s my hand.) The others came running when they heard the call.
Bananas are delicious — for everyone, all over the world, whatever the species. Someone ran off with a piece. Chico, that part is the peel! Then Piccolo joined in, and I made sure the smaller ones got their share. Chico, your face is a bit scary right now — and please don’t stab at the banana peel so hard!
Thank you for spending a little time with our free-living chickens today. See you in the next episode!
