Farm Notes — July 2024: Rescued Kittens, Baby Bulbuls and Fifi the Goose

Every few days we post a short clip from the farm on YouTube. Here are all thirty-one from July in one place — tap any of them to play it right here.

Kittens everywhere

Four stray kitten siblings were injured, but far too energetic anyway. The kittens took on the potty challenge (a great success?), fluffy Kuma had a close-up interview, and Bunko turned into a little hairball. Rescued kittens Imo and Light are the best of friends, Imo and Chai aren’t brothers but get along just as well, and every box is a toy to these playful geniuses. And Natsu, one of our farm cats, gets a big hug as a reward.

The young ones

Even Nanoaru gets angry at a young rooster with no manners. Another youngster carries himself with real confidence — I wonder what kind of rooster he’ll become. It was snack time at our youngsters’ kindergarten (eat up, everyone!), and Grey’s child is fluffy and growing.

Roosters and hens

We hurried over to a farmers’ market to see some stray hens and chicks. Waikiki, our handsome rooster, moved to a new room, and there’s a city rooster who apparently sleeps side by side with pigeons. Ginny, who shares her name with the Harry Potter character, never seems to get old — is it because she’s a witch? Hiyo-chan looks strong and dignified, and cool rooster Sona Grey has fit in amazingly well.

Ducks and a goose

A beautiful goose joined us as our newest employee, and Fifi, our big baby goose, won’t stop clinging to me. Sumire the Muscovy duck and a hungry Dyson spent the afternoon in the chicken coop, a male Muscovy got a close-up (a little creepy?), and the grown-up ducks each have their own personality. Beautiful Francine, though, got angry when someone disturbed her while she sat on her eggs.

Bulbul babies

Our red-vented bulbul chicks are growing well. They love fruit, and now they’re practicing catching insects.

Goats, sheep, cows and a parakeet

The goats are food thieves — they love the chicken feed. Our neighbors, a sheep and a goat, got in the way while I was cleaning, and a ring-necked parakeet that imitates goats fools me all the time. And some cows from Kauai have the gentlest faces.
