Farm Notes — June 2024: Rescued Kittens, Julietta’s Ducklings and Frankie

Every few days we post a short clip from the farm on YouTube. Here are all thirty from June in one place — tap any of them to play it right here.

Five rescued kittens

June was kitten month. Five rescued kittens were looking for forever homes, and the girls found theirs — congratulations! They’re a handful (litter box manners still need work), but too cute not to forgive: they doze off happily, look just like brothers, and share their space with Udon the rooster. Most amazing of all, a female cat loved the kittens so much that her milk started to come in.

Our farm cats

This boy is staying with us — we call him Imo (“potato”), and he has a very sweet sleeping face. Our cats came from all over the place, but they all get along. A chicken wondered whether the cats’ food tastes better, Raiden turned out to be a big cat next to Kanata, and the cats offered to lend a paw with the work — thank you, everyone, the kind thought is enough!

Julietta’s ducklings

Julietta’s babies are as fluffy as can be. One little duck got a surprise from a hen, the ducklings nap side by side next to their mom, and one curious girl is growing every day. Muscovy ducks grow up in no time!

Chicks and baby birds

For chicks, playing is learning. We also went for a drive with the chicks, singing along at the top of our lungs. Sadly, a nest of red-vented bulbul chicks fell down, nest and all. And a big baby bird arrived at the farm — can you guess what it is?

Roosters, hens and new faces

I let a big rooster out into the field, the chickens chilled out in the evening, and I looked back on memories of Sonata, our Easter Egger rooster. Pen-chan lays her eggs anywhere — she doesn’t sweat the details. We met a peacock at the zoo in a rather unexpected spot, and Dyson said hello (what a big eater!). Beautiful Frankie has calmed down, so he’s out of his cage now.
