Good morning! Today I’m replanting bok choy into a big planter. I bought it as tortoise food, but in the ground it would disappear in no time, so they’ll get it bit by bit from the planter. I tilled the soil, removed damaged leaves, planted it with gaps for the roots, and watered it well, since I worry until it takes root.
Five little adventurers
Here are the Peep-Peep Five. (Noisy rooster!) These chicks were born because of my mistake. A wild hen we’d taken in escaped, and catching her and bringing her back took far too long. Meanwhile, chicks hatched. The mother in question went back to being an ordinary hen and abandoned them.
So the five have been adventuring freely. They look like miniatures, so cute, but the grown-ups keep scolding them. I think there are probably three roosters and two hens. They aren’t tame at all, so I’m a little worried, but I hope they grow up safely. Okki-chan, don’t pressure them! They got too close to an “auntie” in a nest box, and she was angry. They don’t understand the rules of chicken society yet. Now they’re getting pecked. No, that’s not your mother. You don’t look anything alike!
Haircuts for the angora boys
When I had time, I trimmed some of the fluffy angora male team, the ones who hold still. This one, come out as a sample. No, I’m not cutting you right now! Mats like this sit so close to the skin that they’re very hard to cut, so I’m waiting for the fur to grow a little. Cut neatly, it grows back nicely. This other one has been here from the start, so it was his second haircut, and he held still like a good boy. Rabbit art! I’d never had to cut rabbit fur before, so I’m feeling my way.
Meet Hiyo-chan
Today’s chicken is Hiyo-chan, a white Leghorn mix. Looking very sharp! As a mix, he isn’t pure white. He’s one of the survivors from this year’s swarm of chicks, and the survivors are growing up very well. He hatched around here to a formerly wild mother who was also some kind of Leghorn mix, so he’s turned out without much wildness.
The name comes from a Japanese comic, Animal Doctor, where the main character keeps a white Leghorn rooster called Hiyo-chan. Borrowing it may have been a mistake: that Hiyo-chan kicks people, and lately this one has started kicking me too. That’s not why I named him!
Right now the medium-sized chick crew is three roosters, including Hiyo-chan and a black rooster, and three hens, living peacefully.
Thanks for watching Chicken Paradise Hawaii! See you next time.
