Nice weather today!
The wanderer from next door
Ever since the storm, this chicken from next door has been coming over to our place. Cute! It’s the same kind as our queen, Oreo: a Plymouth Rock. I asked its former owner, who told me it was bullied by everyone and never really fit in, so it might as well be a free chicken. It was thin and didn’t look well, so I’ve been taking proper care of it. At first I couldn’t catch it, but now it’s completely tame.
For now I’m calling it Piyo-chan (a temporary name). Apparently it was bought as a hen, but the more I look, the more it looks like a rooster to me. If it’s a hen, it will grow up to look like Oreo over there; if it’s a rooster, it will look like Carl.
The flock had opinions. Cho, don’t be mean to the little one! Sonata came over too, hoping for a treat. Some birds came by for a peck. Piyo-chan has probably never seen this many chickens before.
After talking it over with our neighbor, we decided that we’ll look after it here until it reaches a certain size. If it’s a hen and can go back when it’s time to start laying eggs, it will go back. If it’s a rooster, or can’t fit in at all, it will stay with us. So, yet another mystery bird has joined us.
Next to Oreo for comparison: Oreo was not pleased. But look, the same pattern!
Around the farm
Here is our rabbit, Yukimi Daifuku, very curious about the camera. We took this one in from an animal welfare group last year. A big eater, still checking whether the camera is edible. The foot-thumping is so loud that we also call this rabbit Danko. Unlike the small rabbits we were planning to rehome, this one is big and sturdy.
In the small chickens’ room, Piccolo is as popular as ever and trusted by the hens, so they can lay their eggs in peace. The space under the table is soft and fluffy, a favorite with the little ones. The former wild team is a little wary of the camera. Black Tiger likes this spot lately, where the sun looks nice and warm. The nest boxes were crowded during the storm, but things have calmed down now.
Here everyone is waiting for the food to be ready. Low-ranking birds tend to escape to high places, but bit by bit they get used to things and can eat with everyone. Dinnertime! Star and Piccolo keep watch. And Shimako, you already ate!
Thanks for watching Chicken Paradise. See you next time!
