Farm Notes — May 2024: Julietta’s Ducklings, Growing Chicks and Crowing Practice

Every few days we post a short clip from the farm on YouTube. Here are all thirty from May in one place — tap any of them to play it right here.

Julietta’s ducklings

Julietta, our Muscovy duck, became a mom this month, and her newborn babies are overflowing with cuteness. They look like a box of toys, but they’re not! Ducks grow fast, and her little ones are getting bigger every week.

Chicks growing up

Our chicks are growing well, and Grey’s chicks like to nap somewhere warm — keeping chicks warm is so important. I let a dog and a chick play together (Iroha and Nayuta), and it didn’t go quite as expected. Chicks who had a rough start have grown up and joined the grown-ups’ play yard, while others are fast losing their fluff. Raising chicks takes a lot of work, but every one of them is adorable.

Diggers and bug hunters

Chickens are master diggers. Ducks and chickens dug for worms side by side, the flock got very excited hunting for bugs, and one beautiful rooster has earned the title of bug-catching master.

Roosters and hens

Chickens come in every color, shape and size. I interrupted a rooster relaxing, Min-min went for a walk (she’s a little selfish), and Red has been a bit of a scaredy-cat lately. Marron and Rida showed that a good crow takes practice, we had a chat with Glico, a very fluffy chicken, and Tamamushi is one cool rooster. And chickens have poor eyesight? I can’t believe it.

Cats, a goat and some guppies

Ao and Hanabi rolled around right where I was trying to cut the weeds, so the work didn’t get very far. Seven farm cats came out to greet me one day, a hen snuck in among a crowd of cats, and everyone lined up for canned food. Yagisuke, our kid goat, had his nails trimmed (please hold still!), and when I looked in the pond I found lots of baby guppies.
