I’ve come into the pigeon house, and the pigeons are in a big panic. Right now they’re all a bit in breeding mode, so they’re on edge.
A little pigeon from the parking lot
Our pigeon team is as healthy as ever. But the other day, I looked under a car in a parking lot and saw a pigeon, a bit on the small side, sitting at a slant. I thought, “Aren’t you leaning a little too much?” and went closer. Sure enough, its leg was broken, so I caught it. About a week has passed, the quarantine period is over, and today I’ve brought it in.
It’s still very much a baby: maybe three weeks old, or a little more, about a month? The leg was broken in an awkward spot, so I didn’t try to fix it. I just kept the pigeon in a small, dark box, and it healed quite well. It healed a bit crooked, but it can walk now, so that’s good. It can’t eat seeds yet, so I’m hand-feeding it. It looks sturdy, but it’s still a baby, and I can’t tell yet whether it’s a boy or a girl.
Happy’s husband, too much pressure!
Happy and her husband went over to take a look. Happy, don’t bully the baby! The little one is scared of you, Happy; you give off such silent pressure. And Happy’s husband, your threatening face is scary! Stop, stop! Come here, it’s okay. Scary, isn’t it? Go slowly and I’m sure everyone will accept you. It’s already found some food and is trying to eat it, very clumsily. Hang in there! I’ll be watching to see if it can learn to eat on its own and fly.
The finger lime is back
Last year this finger lime flowered and made a tiny fruit that never swelled and fell off. After that it stopped growing, and I wondered if it would die. It turns out it’s just very sensitive to the seasons: one day it suddenly started growing. All these red leaves are this spring’s growth, so it’s about three times as big as last year, with more thorns. I read that finger limes don’t fruit properly until the plant is two years old, so I’m a little hopeful for this year.
Kin-chan’s egg song
She’s about to lay… plop! A fresh egg. Kin-chan is singing her egg song. She’s small, but her voice is pretty loud. Namonakimono came over to listen. And after a butterfly flew away from here earlier, another new life has emerged. I hope it flew off before the storm.
Thanks for watching Chicken Paradise Hawaii! See you in the next episode.
